Loving Lately: Around the House

It's late and I've been kinda "on one" and burning the candle at both ends with all that is going on in behind the scenes here.
I have smidgen of writers block. Concepts are there but I can't articulate further than a few sentences. I checked out my new Twitter friend Carly over at Lipgloss and Crayons  and decided to join her Loving Lately weekly link up with KristenNiki &Rachel   .
I figured I could handle writing about what I'm all about these days as it wouldn't require me to be so pithy.
Let's start with dessert shall we?
Churro Cupcakes. Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting sprinkled with cinnamon sugar.
Oh.my.word. These are so ridiculously good I don't even know what to do!
I made a spice cake for my hubby's birthday barely a week ago and had some of the cream cheese frosting leftover. Damon and Camryn decided that I should use that left over frosting to cover a cupcake of some kind and left it up to me to choose.
Even though I LOVE red velvet cupcakes I just wasn't in the mood so I pored over all my Sweet Tooth recipes until I found this one that seemed perfect.
And oh were they perfect.
So now my goal is to make it through the day without eating too many.
My will power sucks.

I'm also loving playtime with this guy.
He is so busy and so much fun!
There is nothing that escapes his attention and he is excited about showing off his crawling and pulling up skills.
He also enjoys his food and loves to spend time with his sister.
These moments give me pause and I just soak up this love.
I know it will not always look like this so I must document when/where/ what I can!

Right now, I all about dream decorating. You know that thing you do where you find images of your ideal home(living/dining room or kitchen) and you imagine what it would be like to live there with all the cool accent pieces only found in design blogs?
Well I found a whole slew of those in Target last week.
Holla!
I almost had a heart attack. These pieces literally made my heart skip a beat.
AND they were on sale. Enough said.

Last but not least on my list: Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown.
How now, brown cow.
This workout is no joke. It seemed fairly easy when doing it and then I got sore later in the day.
And was still sore the next day.
And the day after that.
I love it. Yoga is one of my favorite workouts already, throw Jillian into the mix and I don't feel like I'm slacking off.
Three days a week you will find me in front of the T.V. at 6am.
She gets my day started off right.

So that was fun and now I feel a little more inclined to continue writing about more pertinent matters like my style posts, my new favorite mascara and  my decorating dreams.
I kid, I kid. Sort of.

What are you loving lately?

Friday's Stylish Mama Spotlight: Heather Myers of River&Bridge

****
Y'all know about my desire to achieve some semblance of balance in the whole mom/work/life realm but I tend to find myself lacking most days.
So I asked a bunch of my friends if I could interview them and find out how they juggle their balancing acts!
****

First up is the fabulous Heather Myers.

Heather and I met about a year ago at Blog Sugar through one of my wedding photographers.
She is all around awesome. Heather is a mom of two (Hudson - 4 and London 18 months)
(check her out in those fabulous lavender skinnies! How cute is her family?!)

has a full time gig outside of home and her own freelance design company!

She is wicked funny and has great style to boot!
yes those are faux leather skinnies she's rocking on a recent date night
She recently created some new business cards for me and they turned out amazing!
Here's a little more about her and she goes "From Carpools to Cocktails"

What is your job title? / what do you do?
I work full-time as a pre-press manager for a commercial printing company in Orange County.  Basically, I ensure that the clients have built their files correctly for press, do any necessary retouching / file adjusting, make proofs, run the digital press, etc. I also am in charge of color management.  In addition, I am a freelance graphic designer and design everything from stationery and invitations to corporate branding.

How do you find balance with work, managing a home and your family life?
After having my first baby, I was able to adjust my work schedule so that I could be home 3 days (and work 4 10-hour days). However, this means that I am out of the house by 6:20am Monday through Thursday. I have to give a lot of credit to my husband, who handles the morning routine and drop-off, not to mention most of the cooking during the week. Although the weekdays are a bit hectic with both of us working and usually not getting home until 5:30 or 6, being home 3 days in a row allows me to feel like I get a good chunk of time with the kids.

How do you stay fashionable and still be ‘mom’?
Since I do go into the office 4 days a week, I have to dress professionally. But come Friday morning, I am in my weekend uniform: denim cut-offs, a tank top and Rainbow sandals. I've been really into accessories lately, so I've found that adding a statement necklace to a casual outfit allows me to feel more fashionable with minimal effort. When I'm with the kids, I have to make sure my outfit is functional- which means no heels! My daughter has recently learned to run (and fast!), so I have to be ready to chase her at any moment! I save the heels for date night.

How would you describe your personal style?
I feel like my personal style is always changing, and it doesn't necessarily fit into one category. Maybe California Casual Chic? Right now I'm wearing a lot of colored skinnies with loose-fitting blouses and either flats or ankle boots. I love mixing hard and soft- like leather pants with a feminine, pearl-adorned blouse. One piece I really want to add to my wardrobe is a blazer with a structured shoulder.

What do you do for YOU to feel good/get re-charged?
With a full-time job, a freelance business, a husband and 2 kids, I don't get a lot of time to myself… but occasionally I will leave the kids with my husband while I run out for an iced coffee and a little shopping. Even just a small break makes a big difference.

Do you make time for cocktails (with friends/dates with hubby)? How often?
My husband and I go on date nights 2-3 a month. We are total foodies, so we enjoy trying new restaurants and eating good food. We also love wine and are totally overdue for a wine-tasting trip! Every now and then, we will take a weekday off work so we get an entire day together while the kids are at school / daycare. We actually took 2 days off this week to do this, and it was so nice!

How do you go from Carpool to Cocktails?
To transition from day with the kids to date night, everything changes- new outfit, heels and makeup!

What is your go-to item for an immediate mommy pick me up?
Coffee!! I love me some coffee and can never have enough. :)

Any tips/ tricks for other moms who are balancing work/motherhood/life?
During the week, I rarely do any housework except for dishes… so come Friday morning, the house is a wreck! For a while, I was stressing myself out trying to keep up with everything and also spend quality time with the kids. I was exhausted and overwhelmed. So I decided that it was more important for me to spend time with the kids than to check things off my to-do list. I have accepted that this season in my life means a messy house. My kids won't remember if the floors were spotless (which, by the way, they never are with 2 kids and a 100-lb dog!), but they will remember the times we had picnics at the park, did crafts or went out for smoothies.

Thursday Thoughts: Home Design on My Mind

A few weeks ago I took a quiz on the HomeGoods website about what my decorating style really was. I know what I'm drawn to but it doesn't always jibe with my budget or real life living with a husband, a soon to be toddler and a tween.
Turns out based on the images I picked I am Vegas Baby and a touch Sassy.
Who knew? But if you read the descriptions they are pretty spot on with my personality but I also think I have a touch of Urban Funk as I like to incorporate interesting and eclectic pieces into the mix as well.
So while I'm glad to sort of have a better understanding of my decorating style it's still a bit complicated to put it all into play.
Especially living where we do.
I'm so looking forward to moving
(hold me to that will you, when I'm 20 boxes deep and can't remember where I stuck my Dutch oven?)
well let me re-phrase; I'm looking forward to having a space that belongs to us and allows us the freedom to decorate/demolish how we see fit.
We love to entertain so we need someplace that allows for that and with room for all the kiddos
Spurring my homeowner/design dreams is the fact that my parents are selling my childhood home and with that sale comes the passing down of the things.
The china I've been promised for as long as I can remember

as well as some great pieces of furniture and cool decorative accents.
Like this killer set of book ends

....but wait they're a great way to stash an adult beverage?
Holla!

And a classic "Fight the Power" fist. I had totally forgotten about this gem until I was by the house to take pictures for the listing.
I'm pretty excited about the things we will be getting and can't wait to spruce them up to make them more 'our style'.
A brand new dining set with great bones that I want to paint black and re-do the chairs in a funky fabric.

love benches at dining room tables - I could get down with this
Inspiration photo via Pinterest
I have been scouring Pinterest for pins on 'how to paint furniture' as I'm sure I pinned one tutorial already but I'm not sure it's the right one for me.
She's also off loading a pair of these great wing-back chairs that I need to find a good/inexpensive re-upholsterer for.
thanks mom!

I think I want those a charcoal grey with nail head studding around the edges.
I pinned this Broad Street Arm Chair from the Destination: Salem event at Joss and Main!
So many options and ideas!
My father is also moving so we are scoring a new washer and dryer from him and I couldn't be happier.
Ours current set isn't falling apart by any means but I'm happy to know we don't have to worry about that happening as his set is pretty much brand new!
Hooray for hand-me downs!
Right now I'm just day dreaming about how I'm going to make our space functional, funky and fun. With a whole lot of color and sass thrown in for good measure.
While I'm at it I'm trying to convince Babe to sell our current TV stand. Sure we plan to wall mount the TV in our next place but we still need a place to stash our equipment and hide the DVD's that currently reside in the ugly towers.
Not to mention Baby Ninja is making it his top priority to pull up on our current glass stand.
So not safe.
So yeah, that's got to go.
I'm thinking more along the lines of this.

Dolce Black TV Stand Media Cabinet - Fits Up To 55" TV or One of my favorite discoveries at WorldMarket.com: Miner TV Stand
Simple enough not to detract from the TV but closed doors (for the ninja) and enough space to hide away all our equipment!
I have so many ideas for sprucing things up but am lacking the time and help for wrangling the boy.
Then I found these lovely pieces in Target and my heart went pitter-pat.

Like for real skipped a beat.
I want ALL of it.
Absolutely all of it. I have no idea where it would all go but I am loving the whole get down.
So hopefully they are still there (and 50% off when I get a moment to go back)!

What is it about this time of year that has me wanting to switch up my decor?
Does that happen to you?
Do you change things for each season/holiday?

What I've Worn: Button Ups & Skinny jeans

This week has been all about working my closet.
Whispering's of fall-like weather has me reaching for old favorites and bringing them to life with fresh pieces that keep me excited about my wardrobe!

I finally found the perfect denim top to wear with my hot pink skinnies.
Perfect pop of color on a cloudy day and functional for chasing after Baby Ninja.

I'm a little obsessed with my leopard flats.
They always add a little something fun to an outfit.

Shoes: Mossimo for Target

Yesterday, I managed to get showered before the kids woke up so I quickly threw some clothes and set about my day.
A need to run errands got me out of my earlier "ensemble" so I grabbed my favorite pair of black skinnies and a relaxed button up shirt.

I actually haven't worn these jeans since before getting pregnant.
I was excited to find that they fit!

While I wanted to be cute, I didn't want to be stuffy.

I've been wanting to wear this J.Crew shirt again for awhile, so that worked out.
Infamous leopard flats...

Jeans: James Jeans Cured

I really liked the contrast of this outfit (the checks & the leopard with the dark denim) and how put-together I felt without looking like I was trying too hard.
I'm glad I did spruce up a little as I got asked on an impromptu lunch date with the Mr.

Turned out to be a lovely day spent with all my loves.
And I didn't have to cook dinner.
Double win.

eight.

It's been roughly 243 days
34 weeks
8 months that we've been a family of four.
This little boy is changing my life minute by minute.
He is full of discovery and wonder.
His voice is being discovered and he loves to express himself to anyone within earshot.
He is full on crawling these days and no obstacle is too big, no crevice to small. He is determined to get where he is going at all times.
He laughs uncontrollably at the funniest times and finds his sister funniest of all.
We are enjoying his developing personality and the ridiculous faces he makes.
Food is always a source of joy for him as is banging toys together to see what sounds they make.
We are still shocked that the time seems to be going by as fast as it is. And that he continues to hit milestones to the extent that I feel as though I can't keep up with all that he is doing!
Having two is definitely a different experience but I love to watch him with his father and his sister and how happy he is to crawl over them, offer his pacifier to share or squeal with delight when they enter the room.
I never knew I could feel the same about another child the way I do my Sweet Pea so its such a delight to spend time with him each day and re-discover mommy things along the way.
My experience with boys being quite little, I am surprised in all the ways he/they are different from the little girls I know and from his sister. Perhaps I am tired and have forgotten all of her nuances and behavioral quirks but these kids are like night and day. Yet, they are also quite similar.
It's funny to see so much of my husband in him as well. I love the way they sit (as much as you can sit with a mobile 8 month old) together and make similar faces. The way their hair curls the same direction and the mutual love in their eyes.
I really feel my cup running over these days.
Sure, there are things I could complain about (has anyone seen my good night's sleep?) but I am focusing on the positive this time around. I'll get back to sleeping in on Saturdays at some point but these days its more about the time we spend as a family.
Relaxing on the weekend while catching up on movies, dining al fresco for a yummy dinner, hanging out with our friends and their families.
These are the moments I want to focus on.
So when I look back in 8 years, I want to say wow, 8 months was such an amazing time.

Bootie, Bootie, Bootie rock it everywhere!

Y'all know how I love my shoes. Always have and always will.
I have a whole board dedicated to them on Pinterest (naturally) and have been drooling over them for as long as I can remember. (we can blame my god-sister who used to work at Charles David).
But lately, I have become obsessed with booties.
Obsessed I tell you!
I have 3 pairs and am currently pining over another pair.
If you saw my post on Mandy's blog about my top 5 must have picks for this fall you've seen my most recent purchase.
The Heather from Sole Society is rocking my world right now. They also come in black as well. Thinking about adding those to the collection.
You know because: "If you like it, buy it in every color"
(sidebar: for the low price of $69.95 I can certainly afford to! Holla!)

The wedge bootie is a new attraction for me and while I loved seeing it on others, I was unsure how I would feel about it on myself.
Anyone else ever have that problem?
But alas, the weather was finally cool enough for me to wear them this past week and I LOVED them.
They paired perfectly with my skinny cargo pants and were easy to walk in while pushing the stroller and comfy while cruising Costco with the kids.
For me, this is the ultimate "mom shoe" for Fall.

I also own the Brescia but they don't make those anymore.
LOVE these
This pair truly sparked my interest in booties as I loved how stylish and simple they were.
I wore them out for date night with a sparkly skirt and loved the edgy vibe they were giving off.

This is me being edgy and fierce - please excuse the laundry basket in the background
However, they do have the equally awesome (and lust worthy) Helena in Chili Red and Black
Helena via @Sole Society
$69.95
Which are just as snazzy and I'm kind of crushing on as well.
And then there is the Aster in Smokey
Hello Lover
I am a smitten kitten.
Aster by @Sole Society
$79.95
They remind me of the Mark +James by Badgley Mischka booties Ashley over at Pursuit of Shoes just scored from Nordstrom Rack.
I can see myself wearing these with boyfriend jeans and a simple tee & blazer or some skinny jeans and a chambray top.
The beauty of the ankle bootie is that it pretty much goes with everything.
Not even kidding. Everything. A dress, a skirt, jeans, skinny cargo's, leggings.
It's all fair game. And it doesn't matter how long or short your legs are because they don't come past the ankle bone (for the most part) and they still look great!
If you've been following this blog for awhile you also may know how much I love Sole Society.
I first talked about them here, here and then here and if you haven't already signed up for Sole Society go HERE NOW!
They offer on trend shoes, free shipping both ways and each day is a new shoe!
I am huge fan as a major part of my closet is filled with their shoes (8 at last count) and I love every single pair.
Also - being a mom I don't often have time to spend hours trying on shoes the way I used to and this allows me to buy at my leisure and since they style them in a real way it gives me ideas on how to rock them!
I love that!

How do you feel about the wedge/ankle bootie?
Have you bought any?

Style Post: Remember when it was Fall?

Remember those two glorious days when it actually felt like Fall?
Overcast skies, a slight chill in the air?
It was great wasn't it?
I got all carried away and rocked boots two days in a row.
And now?
Now it feels like August.

You see how somebody crawled their way into my shot and tried to steal my thunder with his cuteness?
