Halloween weekend wrap up.....

It's Halloween night and I am at home by myself with fully made up/painted face.

I had class today so Babe took Sweet Pea over to his friends  to carve her pumpkin
(cuz I'm WAYYY too dangerous to even attempt that)
and they went Trick-or-Treating at the mall.
I'm kinda bummed I didn't get to go or participate but that's what happens sometimes right?
It's all good as I am thoroughly enjoying my class and learning a lot.
It's good to challenge yourself every now and again.
And I think I also need this time to myself.
There is so much in my mind that it's hard to stay focused!
So much to do, see , think about and feel!
I'm super excited about Ladies Night In this weekend.
I try to host at least one once a year and with all the wedding planning this coming weekend was the first time we had available.
I am so excited to spend time w/ my lovely ladies!!
****
This past weekend was pretty rad too.
Friday we had a costume contest at work ( more on that and pics later) and then it was off to the Pumpkin Patch with Ebony and her kiddos to take pics and ride some rides.
The kids had a blast!
We went back to the house where they played some more and Ebony and I talked until the wee morning hours.
When I went to go tell Sweet Pea it was time to go she had already passed out on the floor!
Under the pool table.
Alas - my camera had died so no pics.
Good times and a GREAT chat with a wonderful friend!
 ***************
Saturday - Babe went to several football games for our family friends and I made trekked out to timbuktu to visit my good friend Tamara who was in town for the week.
She was one of my bridesmaids and a very dear friend.
Whenever she is in town we try to get together for some 'sista girl' face time and this weekend just happened to work out for us both.
She also bribed me with her 'famous chicken' and margaritas.
It worked like a charm.
We spent the afternoon sitting around the table looking at wedding pictures on her fancy shmancy iPad and running our mouths w/ her Seesy.
Talk about a loverly day!

What did you all do this weekend?

thankful thoughts.......on thursdays

My friend Rachel is inspired this holiday season to focus on the true meanings behind the celebrations, food and day off of work/school.
So in honor of that she is hosting this lovely little link up for the entire month of November

In her own words.......

*The 4 Wednesdays (beginning on Nov 3rd), leading up to Thanksgiving, I'm going to write one person and tell them I am thankful for them and why. I will send it to them them that day (or drop it off at their house) and hopefully express to them how much I care for them and how grateful I am that they are in my life. I would love you to do the same.

*The 4 Thursdays (beginning on Nov 4th), leading up to Thanksgiving, I will write a simple blog post about who I wrote to and why. On those Thursdays, I would love for you to join me and write a post. I will link to each of your blogs on that Thursday so that others can visit your site and be inspired. (I am potentially going to do a LINKY, but might just do it myself as well, not sure). If the person is someone you would like to keep private, that is also fine. You can opt out that week or write a general post keeping it private, but sharing some sentiment of Thankfulness.

*It's as easy as that!

I think this is an excellent idea and am grateful she thought to include me!
I am huge fan/proponent of expressing gratitude and giving thanks to all so this is right up my alley.
I'll need to make a list of the people I wish to write to/ about. There are so many people who do for me and my family in so many ways.
And they have no idea just how much they and their actions mean to us.
There aren't enough words or days to express thanks but this project is a start!!

What are you thankful for this year?

What I Wore Wednesday.......errr sort of

Today I am linking up with Lindsey over at The Pleated Poppy for What I wore Wednesday's  because I like a good link up and love to see what others are wearing (hello, nosy Gemini) and to kind of keep me accountable to looking presentable and not just 'okay' at least one day during the week!!

In the spirit of Autumn/Fall and all things warm and cozy I pulled together the simplest of outfits yesterday/ today
(yeah -Tuesday)

Thanks to the lovely miracle that is auto-post this will go live tomorrow(WEDNESDAY)!

tuesday treats

Because I feel like lists
Here are some things I'm digging NOW

* Changes in the weather. while my hair is not a fan of the moisture in the air, my boot collection is happy to come out of the darkness
* Ladies Night In - I try to host one at least once a year with all my favorite ladies from all the different parts of my life and IT. IS. TIME.
*  Movie Night - to go see THIS.
Loved the play, can't wait to see how it comes to life and to spend some QT with my mother, mother-in-love and the rest of the women in my family
* Rainy days. not so much driving in them. or really having to be outside in general. but I like the warmth they evoke. and the need to bundle up & cuddle up
* Fires in the fireplace. We are currently out of firewood but I plan on remedying that issue this evening.
* Good excuses for hot tea, cocoa and other drinks that inspire thoughts of cozying on the couch with a good book.
* Speaking of good books - how about good friends who lend you books?? My girlfriend lent me a few a couple days back and I'm now working on "The Five Love Languages" - I'm sure it will revolutionize my marriage and how I communicate with my husband.
I'm excited.
* Easy dressing. today I paired my favorite leggings with a wife beater, my new favorite boots, and one of my husbands sweaters.
and my motorcycle jacket.
cuz, I'm cool like that.
( I kid)
I dig wearing his sweaters (even though he's not a fan of them coming back smelling like Flower Bomb)
And I especially like the way they look w/ skinny jeans or leggings tucked into boots.

What are you digging these days?

lost .....

My husband lost his wedding ring.
In the house.
He emailed me on Wednesday of last week asking if I had his ring cuz he couldn't find it.
I , of course, was confused as to why I might have his ring, but told him no - had to be in the house.
He swears he put it on the dresser
(but not in it's proper home as seen below)
And he was subsequently late for work looking for it.
I go home and proceed to empty my top drawer in hopes that perhaps it fell inside.
Much to my dismay - the ring wasn't there.
Nor has it turned up ANWYWHERE.
Babe , was off on Friday in honor of his birthday and looked through the entire bedroom to no avail.
Needless to say he's very distraught.
Now you may be asking yourself : "Well why did he have it off in the first place?"
Good question.
My Babe has extremely sensitive skin.
He has nickel dermatitis which means he can't wear anything with silver or nickel in it as it causes his skin to break out.
His ring however is made from Tungsten and we thought that would be okay for him to wear.
Sadly - no.
So he only wears it during the day and takes it off at night.
We had delusions of taking it to the jewelers and seeing if they can dip the inside in 24K gold which we know won't irritate his skin, but obviously never got around to it.
And now it's just missing.
Sigh.
I feel terrible cuz he is so upset  about it and I know he doesn't like being without it.
I feel naked without mine.
I'm sure it will turn up at some point - I lost the back to one of my earrings not a day later and can't find it at all!

Say a prayer will you?

My girl likes to Party all the time>>>>>

HEY!!!

Fancy Facts for Friday

This weekend we will be celebrating my love in honor of his born day and I am so excited.
I love birthdays and am always more excited about his than he is.
It's quite hilarious.
We have a full weekend of family, football, food & fun planned and I am ready to get this party started!
*******
Sweet Pea has parent teacher conference today.
We never have to worry so I'm excited to see what the teacher says!

***********
I'm FINALLY going to go get my marriage certificate!
Yaay!
Yes. I will finally be able to legally change all my 'personal documents' so folks can stop asking me - "what's your last name again?"
and yes I realize it's been almost 3 months since the wedding.
I've been busy.
******
Speaking of the wedding.......
It just occured to me as I was reading a wedding re-cap on another blog that I have yet to do the same!
what the heck?
So next week I will be bringing back Wedding Wednesday's in an effort to re-capture the days leading up to the wedding, complete with photos so this means I will have to start on Tuesday night!
gasp!
I'm excited to share our wedding details with you as you all KNOW how I struggled through the process and it's nice to see your ideas come to fruition. And hopefully any brides-to-be will be inspired and encouraged while reading all the gory details!!

***
I have never lost a child in any capacity and can only fathom what these women go / have been through.
I do have some close friends who have so I will choose to honor them and send them a little love.
Let them know I'm thinking of them, they are special and I am ALWAYS here, when/ if they want to talk.
It's the least I can do.

What will you be up to this weekend?

hodgepodge

I'm pretty excited about some of the books I have to read a few other things that I have in the works.
Things are looking up.
For awhile - I've been kind of all over the place.
Trying to figure out where and how I fit into this grand scheme called life.
How to make my mark on the world and still remain true to what matters most to me.
Honestly, it's been a struggle.
I haven't been a whole lot of fun as I'm full of introspective thoughts and self revelations.
It's been hard to really be honest with myself and my spouse about what I want, how to get it and the things that will be involved in the process.
But I'm happy about it.
I feel like I'm finding my footing on a previously unstable setting.
My makeup class starts in one week and I am SO excited.
Nervous too.
I've never taken a formal class and have no idea what to expect.
I'm also praying that my M.A.C Pro card comes in time as well !!
They are talking 4-6weeks for processing!!
Once that arrives I can get my discounted makeup kit
Which I am beyond excited about.
All that makeup and tools, right at my finger tips!!!
I get all tingly just thinking about it!
***********************************

Saturday is my Babe's bday.
It's exciting to celebrate the passing of another year with him.
I remember his 23rd birthday like it was yesterday.
It involved a lot of drinking, dancing in the streets, general tom foolery, great friends, (purple for me) &  blue plaid (for him) and a couple sweet potato pies.
Good times.
Happy times.
We had no idea where life was going to take us......matter of fact, we weren't even dating then.
But that's a story for a whole other post.
It's funny how time flies when you're having fun huh?

counting my blessings

Over the weekend we had the pleasure of spending time with my lovely friend Amber and her sweet husband Eric.
If you've read this for awhile then you know that Amber was a huge help in the crafting process of our wedding , with a wonderful heart and an open ear.
We hadn't seen each other since the big day and were eager to hang out (of course)
We headed out to the swankiest little restaurant!!
Instantly I was super in love with it.
And of course I had my camera in my purse but was too busy running my mouth to pull it out and take pictures.
That is until we got our table.... and we sat under the beautiful twinkle lit trees and paper lanterns.
Absolutely magical.
And the food was good too.
My prix fixe meal:
Filet Mignon and Shrimp Scampi.
YUM.

The Wonderful VanDuyn's who introduced us to this snazzy place
We had such fun spending a nice 'grown up' evening out with Amber and Eric.

Sunday I decided to make some down home goodness to get the week started off right.
I've been doing super well with our meal planning and sticking to it so I kept it up by making
(that's the Pioneer Woman if you're not familiar)
MMM.MMM.Good.
For serious.
I have never in my life attempted to make such a thing nor have I actually had it at home.
Only at restaurants post a night of drinking & dancing and only from Babe's plate.
So I was excited to see how it was going to turn out.
Deee-lish.
My husband and father moaned and groaned like it was the best thing since sliced bread.
Chicken Fried Steak
Mashed potatoes
 Sweet Corn
and a boatload of gravy

No one could really move for awhile afterwards......

My husband's birthday is this weekend so my mom sent him some 'love' in the mail.

Really Mom?
There are about 9 different kinds of cookies in there and at least 4-5 of each.
Yeah.
Needless to say I took those bad boys to work with me this morning =)
Not all mind you - had to leave some for the birthday boy and the Sweet Pea ; but enough to not be so tempted to grab one every time I pass the box.
(not that that was happening)

You ever notice how my weekends seem to center around food?
Does anybody else live like this?

I realize though that I am incredibly blessed.
Every week I am able to recount the wonderfulness of the weekend - the fun, the food, the family and friends.
It means so much to me to be able to not only have these moments and make these memories but to be able to document them too!!!

It makes me all the more grateful and as we head into the holiday season give me that much more to be thankful for!!!

How do you count your blessings?

work appropriate

Did I mention that I'm now writing for the lovely  writers website  thesmartlyla.com?
Well last week they published my first piece here  and a  few days ago they  posted this other piece about my sartorial tastes.....or lack thereof and my opinion on those of women in general.
That got my wheels turning. Because I work for a fashion company ( shameless plug.....HAUTELOOK) my workplace is not like most.
The 'dress code' ( I'm not actually sure that there IS one) is very.....ummmm......fashion forward if you will. Meaning you will find throughout out my office, looks ranging from the latest , hippest fashions (think studs, military inspired wear) to a sort of quirky t-shirt and jeans type (thanks IT guys for always humoring me with those tees!)

But we have so few rules it begs to question what is "work appropriate" anymore?
It seems most companies have adopted the ever popular "business casual" dress code and then SUPER 'casual Fridays' so the line has become blurred in recent years.
My previous place of employment was at a Fortune 500 company and in a very corporate environment which denoted we should be dressed to impress. BUT - the type of work we did (freight forwarding) gave us quite the wiggle room as there were days we had to 'get dirty' - go in the warehouse & look for things etc......and days we had to get 'dressed'- when the big wigs came to town but for the most part, everyone kept it pretty simple. Very well put together. Nothing to flashy or incredibly fashion forward.
In a word- it was boring & predictable.
NOW - my workplace looks like NY Fashion Week with the latest and greatest in all the trends gracing the halls & elevators. it's a pretty good place to be if you're an aspiring fashionista or already claim to be one.
We wear everything from flip-flops & shorts to studded boots/booties, sky high heels and the hottest denim in town. And I love it. I don't think I could ever go back to a 'corporate' environment.

But it makes me wonder:  these days, when most companies are letting up on the rigidity of the ubiquitous "dress code" are we too comfortable at work?
Women used to be required to wear pantyhose and high heels every.single.day.
(Nowadays if I see a woman with hose on ; I giggle knowing what kind of struggle she is having keeping them up all day).

But when jeans and a tee are the norm how do you 'dress for success' ????
there is a quote from 'someone' that says "Dress for the job you want not the job you have". But what happens when the guy who has the job you want shows up in jeans and t-shirt everyday? And his boss does it too. Do you do the same or dress slightly better????

And while I'm on my little soap box - ladies let's talk candidly ; if you would wear it out Saturday late  night - PLEASE do not wear it to work Monday morning.
Yes there are a few pieces that have been known to make the transition but if it made you feel kind of like a streetwalker over the weekend then your co-workers are probably talking about you on Monday.
I'm just sayin.

As the fashion landscape continues to change and what we wear is more and more an expression of who we are...........I can only hope that companies learn to embrace their employees individuality and let them express themselves.
Unless of course they are wearing a shirt that says " FML" then by all means.......revert back to the original dress code.

celebrating my sister-in-love

A few weeks ago we had the joy of celebrating Babe's oldest sister and one of my dearest friends, Ganell.
I love this woman so much y'all.
She has been a great friend & sister to me for over a decade.
Yes. A full blown decade.
We were giggling about it the other day.
She met me when Babe & I first started dating ; a few months shy of me turning 21.
Now here we are 10 years later, married and celebrating her life!

Ganell is one of those people who is absolutely hilarious w/ out even trying.
We don't always agree on everything or see eye to eye but that does not stop us from kicking it hard on the regular
We are such opposites but one of the things we do have in common : our love of makeup.
One of my favorite memories of Ganell and I is sitting on the floor in the livign room of her old house, Sweet Pea crawling around us and we are surrounded by all of our makeup, taking turns 'doing each other's faces'.
When the men came home we each had one eye a totally different color than the other............it was great.
To celebrate her special day - we hit up Siren Studios in Hollyweird for a night of dancing, drinking and cupcakes!!
We topped off the evening w/ breakfast at Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles before heading back to the Inland Empire and our Sweet Pea.
Here are some pics

ending the night right!
WE love you Ganell and hope you had a fabulous birthday!!!!

this & that

so remember how I raved about my wonderful trip to the almighty Crate & Barrel ?
yeah well I finally took the pics off my camera so I could show you what I got!

here are a few pics of some items we picked up.

A few new towels for the kitchen

place mats and napkins for the dining table
I'm so glad we finally have a cohesive 'flow' to the color scheme in our kitchen.
And the dining table finally looks like people actually eat there and not just use it for crafts.
We also got a table runner in the same shade of green but I have since decided not to put it on the actual table but instead drape it over the sideboard and give that some pizazz.
(of course I have no picture of that - sad face)

Next on my list is to add some color to my window seat area by wrapping the cushion in some kind of fun & funky fabric and getting some pillow covers to accent the space.
I want my home to reflect our casual comfort chic vibe that we have going and realize it's going to be a process to find all the pieces I want that speak to me.........but I'm actually really looking forward to it!!!!!

And because I couldn't resist - here are few pics of my Grill Master doing his thing
the man, the myth, the legend

YUM - sliders & grilled corn

wrappin it up........with pictures!

Happy Monday y'all!
What crazy weather we are having here!
It has been 900 + degrees for the last week and then today we wake up to grey skies and drizzle.
Hello Autumn, nice to finally see you!
Of course I was dressed appropriately in a tank, cardigan and gladiator sandals.
This weekend was pretty rad though.
Friday couldn't end fast enough as I needed to get home and bake somebody happy.
My dear friend LaShaunda had a birthday on Friday and we were going out to celebrate her born day.
Earlier in the week her husband had asked if I would make cupcakes for her for the party.
Of course I said yes (she's amazing y'all!) not taking into consideration that I would be baking./ frosting and getting ready..........yeah.
Multi-tasking Gemini at her finest......
I was kinda pooped so I took a little disco nap first then I whipped up some chocolatey goodness for my girl and get myself together to go out.
Drop off the kid & scoop up my brother-in-law all in one stop and head to the club to get our partay on!
Now I have to preface this by saying - my girl broke her ankle a few weeks back but she was determined to have a good time on her birthday and cut a rug!

working the boot

And boy did she!!
Thank goodness a sister was getting her hair done the next day cuz I sweated mine OUT!

getting our boogie on
We boogied until well past 2am, then went back to our friends house for some early morning delicacies
(read: eggs, turkey bacon & rice <there were no grits>)
and reminisced about days/ times long gone as the dawn begin to take shape.
At about 4:45am we finally said goodbye and headed home.
Why do I continue to do that to myself?
I was draggin the next day and me & Sweet Pea had to be in Long Beach for 10am!!
Sigh.
But LaShaunda &Kevin have known Damon (my husband) for over 20 years.
Kevin & Damon met in elementary school I believe and at one point Babe even lived w/ Kevin's family!
They are beyond friends, more like brothers.
Hence Kevin calling me "Sis" all day long.
They have always been champions of our relationship and I love them both like they are my brother and sister.
LaShaunda and I pretty much hit it off from the moment we met, we are both quite similar yet complete and total opposite.
She is a GREAT friend, wonderful mother and wife and all around kick ass chick.
I feel so blessed to have her in my life and call her my friend!

It was a magical evening spent with fabulous friends who are more like family.

The rest of the weekend was pretty chill and we mostly 'recovered' from our night out on Friday.......

What fun things were you up to this weekend?
