the struggle

OR
flab & fluff + love of sweets VS. Jillian Michaels

the frosted glaze of the holidays are over and I am finally beginning to come out of my food coma
and must admit -
I am really disappointed in myself.
I have not had a decent work out in weeks.
Once I began working I threw tossed aside my drive to 'get shredded' for that of the almighty dollar.
And I say this not because the new year is approximately 1.5 days away and I am scrambling for resolutions.........
but because this is NOT my norm.
I've mentioned before how I am a former athlete and pretty much stay activate 85% of the year
(there is that roughly 25% of the time that requires me to lay on the couch)
so starting back to work threw a bit of a monkey wrench in my fitness plans
especially with the wedding being only 207 days away!!
I want to look my best!
not to mention fitting back into my favorite jeans would be nice.
yes. I admit it.
I cannot fit into some of my clothes.
sigh.
Therefore I am subsequently generally unhappy with a lot of my fashion choices as they all seem to revolve around leggings, stretchy jeans, sweaters and baggy shirts.
I have gained more weight than usual these winter months and it's going to take me working twice as hard to work it off!!
And truthfully I want to start now.
right this minute.
no don't go thinking that I'm just being super vain and this is all about my clothes.
cuz it's not.
I don't like how I feel.
lethargic, pudgy,
just all around uncomfortable.....
and I don't like that feeling
I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get to look like Heidi Klum two weeks post postpartum
but it's going to take a LOT on my part.
First step?
get into the groove.
both literally and figuratively.
Have to find the time to work out.
I leave my house by 6:50am every morning and return about 6:50pm so there are only a few hours between work and sleep that I have free.
and those are usually filled up with "other" things.
I'm thinking that I should just started going to bed at a decent hour and getting my butt up earlier each day and getting in at least 30 min. before hopping in the shower.
I'm sure that would vastly improve my demeanor in the morning as well as put some pep in my step for the rest of the day.
I could attempt to do it in the evenings (which I have done before and enjoyed)
but I feel like that cuts away from quality time with the family.
So beginning January 1st (that's right - this Friday)
I will ease my way back into the world of fitness...........
with a brisk walk around my neighborhood - just to get the heart rate up and get the body back into the mindset of being pushed!!
Then come Monday morning I will be up at 5am (grumbling I'm sure) and getting back to Jillian yelling at me through the screen to 'push through'.
so goodbye homemade cookies, cakes, and pies.
so long caramel corn, fudge and snickers -mini's
Hello sugar/ fat free sorbet and jello
nice to see you again veggies sticks and fresh fruit snacks
salad for lunch?
watch out now!
I WILL stick with my goal and accomplish what I set out to do.
even if I have to drip sweat or cut out french fries in the process.......

ohhh who am I kidding?
I'm NOT cutting out french fries!!!

a stand up lady

my mother spent the holidays in Ohio with my Grandmother who has been recovering from a bout of chemotherapy.
She's already had numerous surgeries and has gone through the chemo with flying colors
however,
she hasn't made the "full recovery" her doctors were hoping for
she's been having dizzy spells along with pain throughout her body
Needless to say the entire family is concerned with her well being and the fact that she lives alone.
when my mother got there she was in the hospital due to some complications she'd been having.
she was able to go home the day before Christmas and 7 out of her 8 kids were there to greet her.
They had a lovely day of catching up, reminiscing on times long forgotten and just enjoying each others company.
The day she was released from the hospital the doctor spoke to my mother and her siblings.
He advised that her tumor had come back
and that at this stage he had no new aggressive treatment recommendations.
basically all they can do is keep her comfortable and let her rest.
she may have about 6 months or so left
when my mother told me that I was kind of expecting it but felt my heart plummet towards my feet.
I'm sitting her choking back the tears as I type this
I am so angry at myself for not having gone to see her this Christmas.
or for not having spent just two extra hours with her the last time she was here.
I'm also dealing with the fact that she most likely will not make it to my wedding.
that just breaks my heart.
I really wanted her to see this and I know how much she has been looking forward to this occasion for some time.
she is a good lady my grandma.
I love this woman fiercely and she has always stood by me.
Always
one of the nicest/ kindest women you will ever meet
my memories of her run deep
as does my unending love.
she has been my inspiration of a true Lady
and how one should carry themselves
I have never heard her shout or raise her voice
but she always got her point across and the job done
she is a phenomenal woman
full of grace and sophistication
with a hint of rustic edge
her story is not yet over,
but reality is what it is
and this is something that I must face.
but I have to say -
I am dreading the day my phone rings and it's my mom on the other end
"Amber, I have to tell you something......"

*****
this is not a woe is me post-
this is me and my raw feelings.
just rambling in my emotions.
please pray for her, for our family, for the next few months we have.......
thank you

five on friday!

well that was quick!
it was only a moment ago that i was composing my weekend wrap up and here I am heading into another weekend!
what the heck is going on? is someone speeding up the days but slowing down the minutes??
ohhhh how they seem to drag on when it gets close to quitting time.......but I digress.

it's been another FAB week complete with HauteLook Holiday party that i'm still recovering from
(but that's a whole other post)

you all know what time it is right?
mmmhmmmm Mama M's Five Question Friday is here!!!

You know the rules but if not ; here's a word from our sponsor:
And awwaaaay we go!!!

Copy and paste the following questions to your blog, answer them, grab the MckLinky code (or not...) and link up (a must!!!)!! I would be your best friend forever if you'd link back to Mama M.!!

If you don't have a blog, but wanna join in...feel free to leave your answers in the comments below!

1. Which boygroup did you like most in your teens?
hmmm can't say that there really was a 'boy group' at that time.
i wasn't that into pop music at the time and more r&b so perhaps New Edition or BBD in the early days?
ohhh hold up.....I just remembered:
Jodeci!
yes major crush - hello diary of a mad band? anyone???

2. Do you do Christmas cards, letters, photos, nuthin', all of the above?
I fancy myself doing a card every year and usually end up waiting until the last possible moment.
next year we are for sure doing the photo card.
sweet, simple and to the point.
besides who doesn't want to see our smiling faces plastered on their mantel or refrigerator???

3. If you could meet one celebrity who would it be and why?
hmmmm once again i'm stumped.
I would have to say Oprah. Or Michelle Obama.
they pretty much rock on so many different levels.
anyone else would just kind of be like 'mehh' to me.....

4. Favorite thing to cook with (i.e. stainless, non-stick, Dutch oven, microwave, debit card...or, perhaps, a cauldron, etc.)?
hmmm perhaps my cookie sheet?
right now i have a new found love for my pizza cooking sheet (?) since we make so many homemade pizzas.
and I do love to bake .......
and to be honest....I don't even know what you do with a dutch oven!

5. What is the one thing you wear the most, besides your unmentionables?

easiest question on here.
sadly it's my leggings. I love them.
they are cozy and go with everything. I can dress them up and down and wear them pretty much any where in any weather.
and they never make me feel fat !!

Now it's your turn!!
feel free to join the fun!!!

weekend wrap up

**** apologies in advance for no pics. haven't had time to upload the camera yet! they are coming soon I promise!!!******

now back to your regularly scheduled program..........

so this weekend as good as any I could have imagined!
We spent time with family and friends and really got into the spirit of the Holidays!
FRIDAY:
after work I gathered up my clan and we braved the wet to head down to Cypress and spend some time with my dad.
Since his fancy new TV stand was delivered, he needed my strong and strapping man to assist him in getting it (safely) out of the box.
Babe also hooked up his speakers and DVD player so he can watch movies at least, until the cable guy comes this week!
Dad also made us a yummy dinner of spaghetti, salad and garlic bread!
Delicious!!
He even made a small pot of 'special sauce' for Sweet Pea without any 'fings' in it!
I then spent the remainder of the evening in OCD heaven as I began to organize his five hundred million DVDs.
Didn't have time or space to sort by genre but what was done is good enough for now!
Thanks Dad for a great evening!

SATURDAY:

Woke up to the rain again and I had a hundred errands to run as Babe and I hosted our very first ever Holiday party!
There was so much that had to be done and I hadn't the time or energy all week to do it!
It was Date Night/Game Night at our house Saturday evening so I had to hit up a few of my favorite places (hello Dollar Tree and Target)
to get my house in proper "Holiday attire"!
I finally picked up our tree and we put it up just before our guests arrived!
Although it was raining something terrible our friends were wonderful enough to brave the weather and come hang out!
So thank you to the Arrigos, Alexanders and (soon-to-be) Johnson's!
We had such a blast with you all!
The fellas have all known each other for 15+ years and it was great to see them reminisce with each other and to know how far they have come is a great thing to witness!
I love these guys - no matter how much time has passed since their last get -together it's like no time has passed at all!
Their friendships remain true and intact after all these years
I honestly don't know when I've laughed so much and just got a wonderful feeling by spending time with these folks!

Sunday:
After a rough start ( stayed up wayyyy too late)
I headed out to Long Beach as Sweet Pea was with my mom and we had plans to go see "The Nutcracker" that evening.
Sweet Pea had never seen or heard of it and I used to go every year up until I was about 12.
The performance was beautiful, magical and spectacular.
All the things the ballet should be.
Sweet Pea was very excited to see and meet a few of the ballerinas as the daughter of my mother's good friend was playing 'Clara' ( and the first time a black girl has played that role in the Westside Ballet Academy) so it was super exciting to 'know' someone in the production.
Sweet Pea picked out a Nutcracker ornament for our tree as well as the Sugar Plum fairy and the Snow Queen!

All in all it was a lovely ending to a wonderful weekend!

so- what did YOU do this weekend?

what a day!

so this morning was crazy as I woke up late and then rushed to get Sweet Pea some cash to spend at her holiday boutique. was almost late for the train due to my mad dash but made it with minutes to spare.
seriously.
scheduled to depart at 7:35 am
train arrived early at 7:31am.
I pulled up at 7:22.
Whew!
then there was a "fire" at work.
well the fire alarm sounded (second time this week) so we all looked around no one moved and went back to work.
suddenly my boss comes rushing around the corner urging us to gather up our things and get out!
so we do.
aaaand here come the fire trucks!
rather than wait around in the cold half of our department decided to take a field trip to starbucks.
it was like christmas or getting a long recess in school (man i loved those days)
so I was behind an hour or so since we had that little 'adventure'......but it all worked out.
get home and Sweet Pea is STOKED to tell me about all she got and wants me to open my gift NOW.
And is not happy about waiting two weeks for me to see what it is.
she then proceeds to show me what she bought for herself.
Nice.
Smart kid cuz I'd have done the same thing and in fact probably did!
Two AWESOME quotes from today
1) co-worker to supervisor upon evacuation:" do we need to clock out?"
2) Sweet Pea to Babe upon picking her up :
Sweet Pea "Hi Daddy , I'm hungry. Let's go get something to eat"
Babe: " well what do you want to eat?"
SP: " I was thinking Carl's Jr. I have some money." (smiling slyly)
Babe: " That was for presents and you have to give Mommy the rest of the money back."
SP: " Yes bue she just said she wanted her change."
Because in the mind of a 7yr. old change = coins
Bwahahahahaha!!!
I cracked up when I heard that!
I love this kid!!!

wednesday wedding update!!

Stop the presses ladies and gentleman!
We have OFFICIALLY booked our date!!!
The deposit has been sent and confirmed as received!!!
Whoo hoo!!!
I cannot tell you what a relief that is!
Although I'm sure those of you who are already married can relate.

So - about our venue;
First- I have to give a shout out to my lovely high school friend Elisa for helping me find this location. Seriously - I owe this girl a cocktail or two because I was in full on PANIC mode and she helped figure out what the best place was for our budget, answered all my ridiculous questions and helped clarify the 'wedding lingo' that was used!
THANK YOU Elisa!!!!

The venue :
On July 25th, 2010 we will be joined together in holy matrimony at the Rancho Capistrano located in beautiful San Juan Capistrano!!
The facility is primarily outdoors and fits the vision I had for our wedding.
Very old school Spanish Hacienda with fountains and a brick courtyard, a rolling hillside for the ceremony and stately accommodations for the bride and groom to get ready in.
Of course we had (the highly opinionated) Sweet Pea when we took a tour and she loved it and so did Babe. There is a wonderfully serene energy about the place and we could feel it.
Not too mention that the pricing was AMAZING and they are able to offer us the Hors d'Oeurves buffet that I was desperately wanting.
Also since we are marrying on a Sunday in an earlier ceremony the reception will be over at a decent time and allow our guests to still enjoy their weekend before returning to work/home on Monday. ( Bridezilla who?)
Y'all I am so excited and am simply counting down the days.
There is so much to be done!
It's all in the details right ladies?
So now I have to find the time after work and on the weekends to work on those. But since I have such wonderful friends and family I am sure I can get some help in those areas.
I also need to figure out a way to make a cute hair piece with feathers and a birdcage- esque veil.
So if you have any ideas - shoot them my way!
oh and as a side note to all my 'crafty' friends......please believe I will be bending your ear about sprucing up and personalizing the venue even more!
Thanks to all for your support and encouragement while I was stressing out!
And for answering my questions too!

*********
On a related note - I have somewhat solved the bridal shower concern.
We will have an engagement party next summer!!!!
(yes I know we will have been engaged for quite some time by then but hey I'm new to all this and it's our world so just roll with it)
This way we can still celebrate with all those whom we are unable to invite to the actual ceremony due to our financial constraints as well as those who may not be able to attend due to prior engagements!!
Problem solved!

5 jolly holidaze questions

its another fabulous friday over here and I am so glad to have made it through another week of work!
we are getting mad busy as apparently there are only 21 shopping days left!
and I have yet to begin!

but i digress.....
you know what today is?
mmmhmm thats right
it's time for 5 questions Friday with Mama M
( said in my best announcer voice)
p.s if you have not checked out her blog please hop over as she is super cute , totally funny and a wonderful Mama!!!
so lets get right into it shall we?

1. Favorite gift you are GIVING this year?
wellll lets see, there are a couple; I discovered a few 'classic' albums at my mothers house and am 'gifting' them along with a record player to my brother. And I was planning on picking up a Wii as a gift for Babe (aka the whole family) .....the rest are a surprise cuz some of these folks actually read this blog

2. How many parties are you attending between now and Christmas?
i think just two, my company's holiday party (whoo to a hosted bar and free food!) and we are hosting a holiday date night game night.
It's our first holiday party as a couple and I'm so excited!!!

3. What is your favorite Christmas song?
i have a couple - donny hathaway's "this christmas" and Jessica Simpson's "o holy night" and mariah Carey's " all I want for christmas" - they all have special meaning and I sing along LOUDLY anywhere they are playing (and that includes the grocery store and the bathroom at restaurants)
4. Who was your favorite elementary school teacher and why?
oh thats easy; my fourth grade teacher Mrs. Clegg. she rocked. We took swimming lessons at the same YMCA and she used to come over our house often -little weird I know but she was so fun and encouraged my passion for reading and my overactive imagination!

5. If you had a choice to live in any other period of time (other than now) what era would you choose and why
I often imagine I am from another era. I never really feel 'with it in this time and place so I would've liked to have lived in the late 20's and 30's or possibly the 60's with all the interesting goings on ( but minus the discrimination and segregation issues)

YOUR TURN!!!!!

shower me with your love

classic song and quite an appropriate title for today's subject matter.

The ever important bridal shower.

Now I know I have queried about this before (don't u love that word?) here
but I still have questions that The Knot just doesn't seem to answer!
Who is actually supposed to throw the Bridal Shower?
Can you ask someone to host one for you?
Is the bride allowed to dictate the type of shower? (i.e. lingerie shower)
How far in advance can one have a shower?
And if none of the bridesmaids have mentioned it is terrible for the bride to mention it?

I was thinking about this the other day as I realized there are too many women in my life that I want to celebrate with to have just one shower.
My wonderfully amazing god-sisters have offered to host a shower the week of the wedding for all involved in the wedding so out-of-town family members can attend,
but what about the friends that I made at work?
or my FB friends & Beauty girls?
I want to include them as I've gotten pretty close to a lot of them and it would feel wrong (to me) if I didn't.
And isn't it about celebrating love with people you love?

But how does one go about this?

Any advice, suggestions or help you can offer would be AWESOME.
